Choosing Garage Doors For Your Home – Advice From A Home Improvement Expert

Garage doors aren’t usually the kind of thing you think about every day, until you need to replace the one you’ve got, or choose one for the new garage you’ve had built. In fact, most people probably don’t even realize that there are a number of different garage door types available, and spending a bit of time finding out more about them could help you find the most convenient solution for keeping your garage safe and secure.

The canopy garage door is one of the most popular choices for a lot of home owners because it’s easy to open even if there’s only a small amount of clearance in front of it. They get their name because of the canopy created by the bottom part of the door when it’s open, and are probably one of best options for those on a tight budget.

Another door that operates in a similar way to the canopy style is the retractable garage door. These won’t suit every home however, as the different mechanism means they require more clearance in front of the garage to open them, but they are fully contained in the garage when raised.

One more ‘up and over’ door that might be a more suitable option for houses that don’t have the clearance canopy and retractable doors need, is the sectional garage door. Usually made of 4 hinged sections, it has the necessary flexibility to rise straight up and then back into the roof space of the garage, following a special curved track.

While most home owners are more than happy with the low maintenance and easy to use garage doors that we’ve already looked at, others prefer the extra convenience of an automatic garage door – especially when it’s raining. Canopy, retractable and sectional doors can usually be modified with an electric motor and other parts to help achieve this.

While the various ‘up and over’ doors may be popular with many home owners, for those who are wanting a slightly different look, or who have garages that aren’t a standard size, side-hinged doors might be more appropriate. Made from wood for a high quality traditional look, as well as steel and uPVC for purely functional garages, they’re another option for you to consider.

Picking out your new garage door might not be something you want to spend too much time thinking about, and for anyone with a limited budget it could be the cost that makes the decision. However, knowing that you have a number of options to choose from could help you to find a door that doesn’t cost much, but is more convenient and looks great too.
